The White House confirmed the initiation of federal worker layoffs on the end of the week, making good on earlier warnings in response to the continuing federal funding lapse, which is now poised to extend into its third straight week.

While the official provided no details on which departments were impacted, a representative from the Treasury Department confirmed that notices had been distributed within that department. Moreover, a union representing federal workers confirmed that members at the Education Department would be impacted by the staff cuts.

Union Response and Legal Challenges

Labor representatives cautions that the terminations would have “severe consequences” on public services used by the public and pledged to contest the moves in the legal system.
